Program Description

Description

What's Cooking Series - A series featuring local chefs. Guest chefs share the back stories behind their cooking lives, the challenges of running a restaurant/food market and talk about a favorite cookbook or recipe.

Join us for a Zoom conversation with our neighbor, Chef Michel Nischan! Nischan is a chef, author, food equity advocate and a familiar face around town as the former owner of The Dressing Room in Westport and founder of Wholesome Wave and the Westport Farmers Market.

Covid-19 has taught us a lot about our food in the past year. Michel will be talking about his journey from celebrity chef to founder and president of Wholesome Crave, a food company selling responsibly sourced, plant-forward soups to large-scale dining facilities (and now available direct-to-consumer). A portion of sales from the company benefits Wholesome Wave, the non-profit food equity organization. Addressing food insecurity and healthier eating habits is a priority for Chef Nischan, and he will discuss the advantages of growing your own food and the “amazing connection” that results from doing so. Our health has never been more important.

Michel Nischan is a four-time James Beard Award winning chef with over 35 years of leadership advocating for a more healthful, sustainable food system. He serves as a Founding Director on the board of the Jacques Pépin Foundation; and on the advisory boards of Chef’s Collaborative, Modern Farmer, Good Food Media Network, and The Culinary Institute of America. He is also Co-Founder of the James Beard Foundation’s Chefs Boot Camps for Policy and Change.

Our moderator for the evening will be Rollie Wesen. He is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Jacques Pépin Foundation, a culinary instructor and Associate Professor at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI and the husband of Claudine Pépin.
