Quinnetukut: Stories of Survival

In this presentation, led by Education Outreach Ambassador Darlene Kascak of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, participants will explore pre- and post-contact history from multiple perspectives including storytelling to provide a more truthful and accurate understanding of the history of Connecticut. Much of what we learn about Connecticut's past comes from a colonized perspective that has almost completely left out the voices of the Indigenous people who have called this land home for over 12,000 years. Using various visual and tactile resources to guide the discussion, participants will learn how the Indigenous peoples of Connecticut adapted to their changing environment and the impact that European contact had on their lives.

All are welcome to attend. Registration is required. Please register each person individually. Children must be accompanied by their caregivers. Space is limited. Registration opens on Saturday, February 17.

About the Presenter: Darlene Kascak (Schaghticoke Tribal Nation) is the Education Outreach Ambassador at The Institute for American Indian Studies in Washington, Connecticut. Her experience as an educator, tour guide, museum assistant, and Traditional Native American Storyteller has taught her the importance of educating both young and old about the many misconceptions and stereotypes about her ancestors. Her style of teaching from a Native American's point of view allows children and adults the opportunity to have a new understanding of Connecticut's Indigenous Peoples' lives both in the past and in the present.
