Soundwaves Concert: "Visions & Vistas for Valentine's Day"

We know Valentine's Day as a celebration of romantic love, but it was originally a feast day honoring a martyr named Valentine.  Our program features three pieces illuminating aspects of Valentine's Day:  romantic love, maternal love, and grief for those killed in war.

Brahms fell in love with soprano Hermine Spies while summering in Switzerland and composed three songs for her; the melodies of these songs appeared again in his Sonata No. 2 in A Major for Piano and Violin.  Sargent Johnson's sculpture "Mother and Child" inspired American composer William Grant Still to compose a sweetly lyrical lullaby as the second movement of his Suite for Violin and Piano.  A composer of ballets, operas and film scores, Sergei Prokofiev vividly expressed emotions and narrative images in his music.  In his Sonata in F Minor for Violin and Piano he used the sonic image of wind blowing through a deserted graveyard to relay his profound grief over the devastation of World War II.
