Description

The Kershner Gallery in the Fairfield Public Library invites the public to “Color in Motion”, a reception for the artwork of Guy Phillips and Matthew Samuels on Friday, December 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The artists will talk about their work at 6:45 pm.

The show can be seen from December 7 to January 19 during library hours.

Matthew Samuels’s signature splatter paintings have been collected and exhibited in many facilities in New York, including Bloomingdales in Garden City, Lennox Hill Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical College; and in Connecticut, including the Housatonic Museum of Art in Bridgeport.

He says, “I am a self-taught, abstract painter always looking to expand the boundaries of my work and practice. I get inspiration by looking, I learn by doing, and I create by experimenting. From toothpicks to industrial brooms, I use all types of unconventional tools to achieve the effects I desire...

Guy Phillips was born in Sydney Australia, lived in London and New York, and eventually settled in Westport, where he is manager and a partner in Sylvan Tennis Club. Guy has had solo shows in London, Sydney, and New York.

He says, “From the beginning, painting the figure has been my main interest. A singular form has evolved; hard edge, flat solid colors, and angular geometric shapes. The figure as design! I paint figures in motion, figures in chairs, hanging cutout figures and figures on grids. Also windmills and chairs and tables in the same hard edge style. I like to think this is a unique and original way of displaying these forms; creating and solving pictorial puzzles and the ensuing development of one's own visual style.”
