Description
Join us for part II of Professor Gil Harel's Worthy of a Revival program.
Bobby on Broadway: Stephen Sondheim’s Company (3 revivals!) Nominated for what was then a record-setting 14 Tony Awards, Sondheim’s Company presented audiences with something far from the escapist dramas that had long populated the Great White Way. Instead, theatergoers were treated to a topical and frank depiction of life, dating, love and marriage in New York City. As Sondheim famously offered, "Broadway theater has been for many years supported by upper-middle-class people with upper-middle-class problems. These people really want to escape that world when they go to the theatre, and then here we are with Company talking about how we're going to bring it right back in their faces". During this program, Professor Harel will discuss the history of this unusual show, demonstrating from the piano to illustrate complex musical ideas that are integral to the story.
