Katie Lansdale and Alan Murchie will present a concert of Sir Edward Elgar's works for violin and piano.
Now beloved worldwide, the great British Romantic composer Edward Elgar rose over his lifetime from humble beginnings to worldwide acclaim. Join renowned violinist Katie Lansdale and esteemed pianist Alan Murchie, who trace the self-taught Elgar's musical journey. In addition to Elgar's first decades creating artful charming salon works, the mischievous Etudes remind us that he longed first to be a virtuoso violinist. Suddenly, in his 50s and 60s, Elgar had an extraordinary burst of creativity, writing large-scale works which culminated in the poignant and expansive Violin-Piano Sonata. Knighted by the queen, honored by great composers across Europe, over time Elgar defied the British musical conventions to create a new noble, tender kind of music. It is now widely recognized as the irresistible sound of English Romanticism.
