Program Description

Description

Just days after its official release, award-winning NPR correspondent Aarti Shahani visits to talk about her memoir, Here We Are: American Dreams, American Nightmares.  Aarti and her family emigrated to America in the 1980s. Her father and her uncle set up a business selling small electronics, but unwittingly sell to a drug cartel. Given bad legal advice, both end up in jail while Aarti wins a scholarship to an elite Manhattan prep school. She travels to Rikers Island often to see her father. Once he is released, their nightmare is not over. Now she must help prevent him from being deported. Shahani’s book illustrates how the complexities of the U.S. immigration system and the threat of deportation can impact a family. Her book is a coming-of-age story and a love letter from an outspoken modern daughter to her soft-spoken Old World father.

A light lunch will be served after the author speaks.  Registration required.
